It’s the end of a long day, the fridge contains ingredients that don’t quite make a dinner, and ordering takeout feels like the easiest option. That’s the kind of evening where a meal kit can make sense.

Is Home Chef worth it? Our assessment: it deserves a look if you want help planning weeknight dinners and are willing to pay for convenience. The decision comes down to what you would otherwise spend, how much cooking you want to do, and whether you like the weekly menu.

How does Home Chef work?

You select meals from a changing menu, choose available customizations, and receive ingredients with cooking instructions. Home Chef lists more than 35 meals and 18 extras each week. Its “Customize It” feature lets you adjust eligible dishes, although availability and pricing depend on the selection.

The practical appeal is having a dinner plan before you get hungry. You still need to check each recipe for equipment, pantry staples, and preparation requirements.

How much does Home Chef cost?

Home Chef’s support page lists standard meals from $9.99 per serving, with prices varying by order size, meal type, and customization. It also lists minimum weekly order values of $50.95 for the Home Chef Plan and $90.81 for the Family Plan. These are published minimums, not a quote for your chosen box.

Is it better value than groceries or takeout?

There is no universal winner. Compare the same number of dinners and servings, including delivery fees, tips, and ingredients you would otherwise buy.

  • If you already meal-plan efficiently: price out your usual grocery basket first. Convenience may be the main reason to pay more.
  • If you regularly order takeout: compare a full-price Home Chef week with your actual takeout receipts.
  • If unused groceries are a problem: consider whether planned portions would help, but remember that delivered ingredients can still go unused.

A useful calculation is: total weekly dinner cost ÷ number of servings you actually eat. Compare normal pricing after the introductory offer ends.

Dietary preferences: check the menu before subscribing

Home Chef offers vegetarian choices, but says it does not guarantee meals for a weekly vegan subscription. If you need a fully vegan routine, check the available menu carefully before committing. Read its vegetarian and vegan guidance.

Dietary preferences are also different from allergy safeguards. Home Chef says cross-contact can occur during production and transit. Review its allergen information and each recipe’s ingredients rather than assuming a filter makes a meal suitable.

Can you skip a week?

Yes. Home Chef lets you skip upcoming deliveries through your account. Its help page currently states that skips and meal edits must be made by 12 p.m. CST on the Friday before the scheduled delivery week. Check the exact deadline shown for your order, especially around your first delivery.

This is a recurring subscription, so an introductory order should come with a calendar reminder to review the following week. Skipping one delivery is different from ending the subscription. See Home Chef’s delivery-skip instructions.

How to evaluate a Home Chef introductory offer

Before you choose an offer, check who qualifies, how many orders the discount covers, whether shipping is included, and what you will pay afterward. A headline discount spread across several boxes is different from the same saving on your first order.

Compare the current Home Chef offer and this week’s menu before deciding.

Our verdict: worth considering for easier weeknight dinners

Home Chef is most compelling when deciding what to cook is a recurring frustration. Look at the menu, build a realistic order, and compare the full price with your usual dinner spending. If the meals appeal to you and the convenience fits your budget, it could be a useful addition to your weekly routine.

If your priority is the lowest possible food bill, or your dietary requirements leave you with too few suitable choices, keep comparing options. The right meal service is one you will enjoy using after the welcome discount is gone.
